Shiitake Mushroom Kit Review

9-10" Shiitake Mushroom Log Review

(More customer reviews)I had never heard of a mushroom log before until I was flipping through a catalog of expensive items and saw one. My thought was that it would make a great Christmas gift for my Dad, but I thought the price was a bit much, especially considering that shipping would be added on top. Since I was ordering from Amazon anyway I decided to look if mushroom logs were available, and indeed they were, for less than the price in the catalog I had been flipping through. Within a few days of placing the order, I got a very nice email from Sandra at Lost Creek. She wanted to know approximately when I would like the item to arrive, and explained that it's not good for the log to sit for long periods of time. I hadn't even considered that, and had missed the part in the description where that is stated. So I specified a date. I got an email from them when they had shipped the item, and it arrived a day before I had requested. How refreshing to see such a commitment to customer satisfaction.
Upon opening the box I saw that the log was nicely packaged for gift-giving and included detailed instructions, a "quick reference" card, a recipe booklet, and black-and-white pictures of what to expect when the log fruits. (The folks at Lost Creek must have taken to heart the other reviewer's comments back in 2005. I like it when people are willing to learn from their experiences.) No tray is included, but that fact is clearly stated in the description, and besides, it's cheap enough to get a plastic bucket from the supermarket or the hardware store.
Short Version: This is a wonderful and unique gift, nicely packaged and shipped right on time. Plus, the folks who sell it are clearly very focused on customer satisfaction. I couldn't ask for a better and more personal shopping experience.

AeroGarden 900340-1200 6 Elite with Gourmet Herb Seed Kit, Black with Stainless Accents Review

(More customer reviews)This is my second AreoGarden from Amazon. My first one was purchased a year ago, the classic which I was thoroughly pleased. The AeroGarden Classic 7-Pod with Gourmet Herb Seed Kit, Silver. The classic model uses a drip hydroponic method. A small water pump in the reservoir that pumps water over at the top of the seed pods. This model here the AeroGarden 6 Elite uses a small and very low cfm air pump built into the base that pumps the air through a fish tank aerator stone. It creates very little splash water movement in the reservoir unlike the classic. This makes me skeptical AreoGarden may be trying to cut cost on the mechanics and dwelling more on appearance. Only time will tell the truth.
Pros:
Water temp stays cooler (water pump not in water reservoir)
Appearance-big improvement over the classic model
Grow bulbs-(better designed than classic's bulbs. Elite uses a flat more direct light coverage bulbs )
Roots and debris won't interfere with water pump performance
Cons:
Less sophisticated hydroponic method (not a drip method)
Noise- typical of air pump humming
Air pump stone replacement (but replaced for cheap)
Very likely water leaks in the near future (Grommet/hoses bottom of reservoir air line to base)
***Costly bulb replacement on all AreoGarden models***
Bottom line:
Classic has better engineering but the Elite has the good looks
Note: If you do not want to keep repurchasing expensive AreoGarden seed kits. Keep your old pods and moisture caps.
I ordered 100-1" Grodan Rockwool - 2x2x1.5in. Cubes, 50/sheetcubed off the internet. This is a great replacement alternative material that was originally used in the pods. Use your own seeds of choice. I am using General Hydroponics brand General Hydroponics MaxiGro 2.2 lbs. for herbs. I believe I am producing higher volumes of growth than with the AreoGardens nutrients and replacement seed kits.
(In my openion LED lighting would have been a better alternative choice, they can last up to 15yrs+ and may use a little less power, and "many" un-waisted bulbs. Go green AreoGarden!)But of course they want to sell you replacement parts, I guess thats what helps keeps them a float.
***GlowPanel 14 Watt LED Growing Light Panel-Plant Grow Light Rivals 60 Watt Metal Halide/HPS Full Spectrum Growth Lite or Hydroponic Lamp 225 LED Grow light Panel Red Blue 110 V, 2501MXare available on the web. I hope to try this on my older classic when it is time to replace the bulbs again.
Even though it maybe slightly ugly.

**UPDATE** Item returned
After having this unit for a short time (used 10 days) the humming sound increasingly got much worse. This was not my only issue with the Elite. I thought I would do a test between the Classic and the Elite. Started them both on 12/10/09 but had to end the experiment 12/20/09 due to the annoying humming sound coming from the air pump in the Elite. The Classic model wins hands down in the small time frame on growth as well. I placed new bulbs in my older Classic and using my own seeds, food, and rock wool and re-used old pods. All pods in the Classic had sprouted much sooner and were full 2 ½ tall on the Dill and Tarragon, and Basel is beautifully full. In this time frame Elite and thier Herb Kit had only three pods with tiny growth pale in comparison. The Elite was returned back to Amazon today. I will order myself another Classic or one of the unites that do not use the air pump method.

Wine Grape Bonsai Review

I figured it was due to the slight change in weather which was fine. A few weeks later I discovered it had no live roots. It was completely dead. I would expect it to live for a very long time. What was up with that?

AeroGarden 900120-1250 Florist In A Box Review

(More customer reviews)I love being able to take things out of my Aerogardens and put them in the vases. I keep my herbs that way sometimes when I want to re-plant the Aerogardens before I'm totally done with the herbs that are in them. I haven't used the basket, but it's nice. It's a pretty neat concept overall and a purchase I'm not sorry I made.
As for the Aerogarden, as another reviewer said, sure you can build your own system for less money. But it won't be as compact, attractive, or easy. I have four Aerogardens (3 different models,) and have purchased one as a gift - and have never had any trouble with any of them. Their customer service can be hard to reach online, but if you call the number they will handle anything like a quickly burned out bulb very quickly. Nothing about these systems is "cheap." My oldest one is going on two years old and still works like a champ.
I do recommend shopping for sales on them though. If you pay full price, you paid too much. ;)

AeroGarden 3 Elite Seed Kit, Black with Stainless Accents Review

(More customer reviews)I followed the instructions as to how to use the Aeorgarden seed pods that came with the unit. Todate, which is about 4 weeks later, one pod did not grow. That was replaced by Aerogarden after more than two weeks after informing them of the problem. Their phone staff is excellent.
As of today, one pod is growing the other one hasn't started. It is now 4 weeks after "planting" The pod says to allow 14 -20 days before it will sprout. I am going to wait another week, before I call for a replacement pod.
This shouild be a great unit, but so far it is at best just satifactory. I bought two others, before I got the results of this one. My bad! The advsertising literature made it look wonderful. I hope they come close to the pcitures. I will follow up this comment in a while after I see how the othere units grow.(or don't)

(More customer reviews)Seeds never grew anything. I e-mailed the seller and was told that the seed takes 6 months to start a plant. I wouldn't have bothered if I knew that....pretty ridiculous. My problem is with the plant NOT the seller.
I got the seeds quickly. However the review was about the item, not the seller.

Brussel's Golden Gate Ficus Bonsai Review

(More customer reviews)I received this tree on December 17th. I was home for delivery (it was sent as a gift) we unwrapped it immediately. The soil was very moist, almost soaking when I unwrapped it, so I did not water it again. Some of the leaves were starting to curl and blacken, but I assumed that was from shock. I emailed Brussels directly over that weekend and phoned them on the 21st. I have yet to receive a reply from either venue. The tree itself is now about dead, though we have it in direct sun and have been keeping the soil moist. Almost every leaf is blackened and curled/dried up. Very disappointed in their customer call back.

Herb Pot Trio Review

(More customer reviews)This product is a beautiful streamlined planter if you like contemporary styles, or you are looking for something more unique than the traditional country style herb planters. I wasn't aware that the two pieces separate if needed. It was a little tricky to repot herbs as a result. If you're looking to grow large bunches of herbs, this probably isn't your planter. However, it would be ideal for small kitchen herbs on hand. I haven't tried to grow herbs from seed, but I wonder if this would be more appropriate. Like I said, I repotted my bunches of herbs from the nursery into the herb trio, and the three spread out nicely. They look really pretty growing out of the top of the stoneware. The water hole at the base of pot is an interesting concept, but I worry that all the water isn't reaching the herb on the far left, so I pour into the top of third and middle pot as well occasionally. Overall, unique quality trio.

LOU'S BONSAI NURSERY JUNIPER BONSAI TREE IN JAPANESE POT Review
