Springstar BioCare Gnat Stix S5333 Review

Springstar BioCare Gnat Stix S5333

Did the other 5 star reviewer actually see the product? These are tiny rectangles of fly paper that have holes on each end so you can put the (included) toothpick through it and stick it in your plant pot. I found them to be small and useless. The package could fit about 10 times or more of the contents it comes with. Disappointing - useless...

Miracle-Gro 0149302-556 Potting Mix - 16 Quart Review

Miracle-Gro 0149302-556 Potting Mix - 16 Quart

I have purchased other potting mixes and been horrified to find bits of chewing gum, crushed tin cans, etc in them. I've never had this happen with Miracle Gro. Miracle Gro makes a good mix, at a decent ratio, which is great for growing most standard houseplants and excellent for growing from seed.
As for the gnats: Fungus Gnats can be found anywhere there is rot. Don't clean your sink for a week - see those bugs? Same thing. They eat rot. They cannot live in dry soil. THE BEST PREVENTION for fungus gnats is to water with either a drip-irrigation system (plastic tubing with holes in it, hidden beneath the soil surface) or water bottom-up (water the dish under the plant, and let the soil soak the water upwards).
The fastest and most common way to become infested is to overwater your plants. I did this one year - we had them everywhere, in all our food, on the walls, and it was disgusting. If you already have an infestation, try lowering the frequency of your waterings - your plants won't get dehydrated from a little less if the gnats have been happy with what they've had. Let the soil top dry completely before you water - gnats and their young live near the top, in damp soil.
Yes, I've seen more gnats with this than other soils. However, that could easily have been because the batch I had had been kept more damp in the store than the other stuff. Water less, you'll have fewer gnats. Get Scott's and be prepared to be disappointed (that's the brand I found the crushed tin-can pieces and gum in).

Green Light Neem II - 24 oz Spray #07824 Review

Green Light Neem II - 24 oz Spray #07824

This worked great, the bugs died after one use. They came back a little a few days later but a second light application and we never say them again.
I would recommend following the instruction very well about washing the plants after application and not on a sunny day. The second time we used it I did not wash one plant off well enough and some of the leaves got burned from the sun... The other plants that I washed off well were fine, I just figured the instructions were over protective and did not go back and get more water to really wash of the one last plant. But the washing after application I found to be important, as only that one plant had leaves get burned from the sun.

GoGnats: 16 Ounce Review

I am so glad I found this product!! Last summer I moved into a new place with a balcony and I put a few of my potted houseplants outside to spruce up the space. I also bought a couple new plants from different stores. When I brought the plants in for the fall/winter and after repotting some other plants, I ended up with fungus gnats. I'm not sure if they came from outside, the new plants, or the potting soil, but they soon spread to ALL of my houseplants (about 8).
After researching to find out what all these fruit-fly-like bugs were, I found out about fungus gnats and searched for natural ways to eliminate them. I tried repotting the top parts of the soil (some plants I completely repotted-but then I wasn't sure if the soil had eggs in it), I used lemon juice in bottle caps to trap the adults, and I tried letting the plant soil dry out for as long as possible, but the plants were suffering and the gnats kept multiplying! I then decided I needed poison, and bought different types of flying-bug sprays, but nothing worked, and I worried about spraying stuff in the air with my fish tank nearby.
My boyfriend said if I didn't get rid of the gnats, he would throw away all the plants :(, so I looked for solutions and found out about a product called Gnatrol. However, I believe Gnatrol is now unavailable, so GoGnats came up in searches and I took the plunge (I wish it was priced a bit lower). I mixed it with water (maybe more concentrate than I really needed, but I wanted to kill those bugs) and drenched every plant with it. I put all my plants in the bathtub and poured the mix through each plant until it flowed out the bottoms. Immediately there was a decrease in the amount of gnats, but a few were still flying around the next couple of days. So on the third day I did a second drench. And now, more than a week later, the fungus gnats are COMPLETELY GONE and my plants are healthy and perky.
My boyfriend and I are so happy!! It was a great purchase, and I still have a lot left over if I ever have another infestation of bugs (I think it can kill more than gnats). I also love how it's safer than toxic pesticides. Definitely a good choice!

Well, not being a big writer I don't usually write reviews, even on things I really like. However, after saving my roses twice, this thing deserves it. It kills all the bugs pestering them, and being a 3 in 1 product, it helps lower maintenance on an otherwise difficult plant (roses are susceptible to so many things!). I (shouldn't have) neglected them this whole summer, and by September they looked like they were on the brink of death (they had some identifiable diseases and pests). In fact, I thought they weren't revivable, but I tried anyway. I pruned them and sprayed them (always use goggles and gloves, safety first) and next thing I knew they were growing robustly again, budding even. I had my doubts when I first bought this, now I'm at my second bottle. The only downside I know of is the 'good' bugs that can be killed by it, and possible danger to other wildlife. This can be helped a bit by spraying directly as much as possible on the leaves/stem, and spraying sparingly. Oh yeah, and it smells bad, but that's only if you smell it directly which would be a pretty stupid thing to do. I never had to use it on other flower plants though, but for roses this is a must have. (However it can't prevent or kill rose viruses and bacterial infections!)
As for questions about the odor: I don't know about indoors. I only used it outside. Sorry. But then again, if you're growing your roses indoors, it's very unlikely to get diseases and pests. Unless your house has the conditions to grow the diseases, and they happen to be in your house, you probably won't need it.
