Gnatrol WDG - 60 grams Review

Gnatrol WDG - 60 grams
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ever since I started growing houseplants, I've had a bad infestation of fungus gnats. I found that the bag of potting soil I purchased from the store was the culprit and tried almost everything known to man to try & get rid of them. Finally being fed up with it, I created my own concoction of outdoor pesticides and although it got rid of the gnats, it almost killed all my houseplants.
My plants came back to life after I drenched the treated soil with plain water, but this was over a year and half ago. I decided to repot my plants recently and ran into the same infestation of fungus gnats once more after getting another bag of potting soil.
My girlfriend threatened to throw my plants away, but I promised her I'd take care of it. Fearing for the life of my plants and not wanting them to go through the same near-death experience, I bought several indoor insect sprays (Neem Oil, pesticides based on Chrysanthemums, etc). Unfortunately none of them worked.
I did more research on the Internet and found "Gnatrol" (AKA BTI) is one of the common solutions to fungus gnat larva. Not wanting to go through "no name" Internet stores, a quick browsing search resulted in me choosing Amazon as my retailer of choice.
My infestation was pretty bad. I had at least 20+ fungus gnats flying around on a particular plant and in the soil. Before Gnatrol, I had to opt to use a vacuum cleaner to suck them up on a daily basis until my Gnatrol came in the mail. I ordered the 60 gram container of Gnatrol from BetterGrow Hydro. This is actually more than enough. I haven't even used the full gallon of drench I created from the mixture and probably have enough for 15 more gallons for further treatment. There is a shelf life for Gnatrol, so if you don't anticipate using all of it in a timely manner, you'll probably be wasting it.
Finally after receiving the Gnatrol, I followed the instructions on the container for "bad infestations" and drenched all my houseplants with it.
Information on Gnatrol (BTI) on the Internet states that Gnatrol will only affect fungus gnat larva. It will do nothing to adult fungus gnats. Furthermore, the average life span for a fungus gnat adult is 7 days.
Today is day number 6. I inspected my plants thoroughly this morning and only found 2 fungus gnats on the houseplant with the worst infestation. The Gnatrol seems to be working. Despite the fact that 2 adult flies are on my plants, it's possible that those were adults from the day I drenched my plants with Gnatrol. We'll see if there are any more left over in the next couple days.

Springstar BioCare Gnat Stix S5333 Review

Did the other 5 star reviewer actually see the product? These are tiny rectangles of fly paper that have holes on each end so you can put the (included) toothpick through it and stick it in your plant pot. I found them to be small and useless. The package could fit about 10 times or more of the contents it comes with. Disappointing - useless...

EcoSMART Ant & Roach Killer 14 oz. Aerosol (2 PACK) Review

EcoSMART Ant and Roach Killer 14 oz. Aerosol (2 PACK)

I had no problem at all with the way it smelled...it smells like cinnamon, so that is way better than being clouded out with the normal chemical sprays. Our house must be on top of one of the major ant hills inthe world as we have a horrible time with ants, especially in the kitchen, and we don't want to use pesticides in there, so I found a can of this and what a saving grace it was. I highly recommend it!

Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade 5 Lb Review

Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade 5 Lb
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used DE in my home becuase of bedbugs. It has been about a month and i havent seen one since. I reccommend food grade DE as a safer non-toxic pesticide. In the home, left undisturbed it should work for months, I have never used this outside.
I reccommend buying a specific pump to be used with DE and also a face mask for application.
If you have bedbugs, first get treated by a professional and then use DE as a preventative. Ask how to apply for maximum effectiveness (yes this works if done correctly). Also visit bedbug websites to learn more.

Safe for people & pets. You can even eat it or mix it in pet or livestock food to kill internal parasites. It's a top safe flea powder too... oderless. Sprinkle it in your garden, basement, under the sofa cushions, under the carpet, mattress & the bugs are gone safely. Still works if it gets wet.

Concern Diatomaceous Earth Crawling Insect Killer Review

Concern Diatomaceous Earth Crawling Insect Killer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Living in Northern Illinois we have problems with lots of insects during the summer months, (specifically ants and earwigs). My husband and I do not have children or pets and together we keep a very clean house. When I first started noticing ants, earwigs, spiders, etc, I tried products from local hardware and home improvement stores and noticed minimal results. Then I went to a costly, professional pest control service and noticed slightly better results, however I still had bugs in my house on a regular basis. I decided to research other pest control methods and stumbled across diatomaceous earth and how it controls pests organically. I read about the positive results people had experienced using it for pest control and how the bugs can't develop a resistance to it. My understanding about the way it works is when the bug gets the powder on itself, the powder actually scrapes the bugs and they end up dying from dehydration. (Similar to a human walking through glass.) (I know it's kind of gross...) Anyway, I decided to give it a try and am very happy that I did. Practically overnight my husband and I stopped seeing earwigs and other bugs in the house. We were simply amazed with the quick results and, since this is organic, we were very happy that we were no longer being exposed to chemicals. I have a few potted plants outside and was so frustrated that they were dying despite regular watering, sunlight and use of a top-grade fertilizer. One night I noticed an earwig crawling around the rim of the pot and wondered if they were the cause for my plants doing so poorly. I decided to put some diatomaceous earth around the top of the pots, (in the dirt), as well as the base of the pots and could not believe how quickly they all perked up. I have to say that these plants have tripled in size since the addition of the diatomaceous earth. I have never had blooming plants look as terrific as these do.
The only drawback to this product is that it must be reapplied after being rained on, but it's a small price to pay to have a bug-free home and beautiful plants. A co-worker of mine kept complaining about ants in her house, (she has kids and pets), and said she's done everything she can think of, (bleaching, chemicals, extra cleaning, covering pet food, etc), but still had ants. I told her about the diatomaceous earth, how it's organic and how I was impressed with the results. She purchased this same product, (Concern diatomaceous earth), and could not believe how quickly it stopped the ants from coming into her house. She has not seen even one ant in her house since a day or so after she put the diatomaceous earth around the perimiter of her house. I would highly, highly recommend this product to anyone who has problems with bugs in their home, in their potted plants or garden.

Espoma Organic Earth-Tone Insect Control - 24 oz Spray IC24 Review

Espoma Organic Earth-Tone Insect Control - 24 oz Spray IC24
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My wife purchased this product locally because she was lulled by the word 'organic'. However, I was going to check out the product on the web and was looking on the label for the company's url when I noticed a very devious and clever new trick.
On the bottom right corner of the product label was a tab that said to peel here for more information. When the tab is peeled back, a whole two-page warning label opens up about all kinds of non-organic warnings, i.e., don't have human/pet contact - cautions, cautions, and more cautions! The peeled-back label is HUGE - twice the width of the spray bottle.
I am all for warning labels - I just do NOT appreciate deception by playing on the word "organic" so that unsuspecting customers will think it is totally safe - even around children and pets.
We returned our spray bottle - complained about this deceptive practice - and got our money back.

Orange Guard 103 Water Based Indoor/Outdoor Home Pest Control - 32 oz Spray Review

Orange Guard 103 Water Based Indoor/Outdoor Home Pest Control - 32 oz Spray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are chemically sensitive, have pets or children, it's likely you have problems with typical ant/bug killers, even "odorless" ones that claim they're safe once they're dry.
Orange Guard has been my staple indoor pesticide for at least six years. I've tried other "natural" orange pesticides, notably one by Ortho available in stores like Lowes. Instant headache. My sinuses picked up the trace of petroliate so minor it's not even listed. (I inquired -- the nose knew.)
Orange Guard has nothing but orange. My cats can blithely walk through the spray and while felines aren't citrus fans, they can proceed to lick themselves silly and nothing bad is going to happen.
Natural products do not have the staying power of serious chemical pesticides and you can't expect them to. During the current heatwave, a morning invasion of ants through kitchen plumbing crevices is normal. I've been comparing Orange Guard with another natural insecticide (pyrethrins) via Safer Tomato & Vegetable pesticide. Pyrethrins is also considered safe for use around food and animals. The odor is minor, inoffensive, and causes no twitching of the sinuses. However, the spray will keep ants out only an hour or two when their invasion is of Normandy-proportions. Orange Guard holds up 6-12 hours. In normal usage -- when ants aren't as desperate -- it lasts several days and that's usually long enough for them to look for more friendly places to live.
If you like citrus, the fragrance is wonderful, pure and fresh. Leftovers (year-old Orange Guard) should be used outdoors because the smell strengthens and becomes somewhat obnoxious -- just like aging oranges. But you can avoid that by using it as an air freshner or wiping your wood furniture with it. The slight amount of orange oil will make your wood happy.
12/7/08 -- While Orange Guard is unavailable on Amazon right now, it's easy to find. A number of hardware store chains carry it. Google will help.
8/2009: [...] is listing many outlets now. Ace Hardware and OSH and Whole Foods are among them.
Also, someone asked about cockroaches. I don't know about Orange Guard, but a safe and excellent little known remedy is "roach chalk." I think -- not positive -- it's made of boric acid. You simply draw lines around areas to protect. It's available in Chinese markets. Hmmm. I wonder if Amazon has it. . .
Aug 2009: Update on Chinese roach chalk - it's illegal due to impurities in the imported variety. You know, like lead. But you can find safe brands on line and in larger home stores.

GoGnats: 16 Ounce Review

GoGnats: 16 Ounce
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am so glad I found this product!! Last summer I moved into a new place with a balcony and I put a few of my potted houseplants outside to spruce up the space. I also bought a couple new plants from different stores. When I brought the plants in for the fall/winter and after repotting some other plants, I ended up with fungus gnats. I'm not sure if they came from outside, the new plants, or the potting soil, but they soon spread to ALL of my houseplants (about 8).
After researching to find out what all these fruit-fly-like bugs were, I found out about fungus gnats and searched for natural ways to eliminate them. I tried repotting the top parts of the soil (some plants I completely repotted-but then I wasn't sure if the soil had eggs in it), I used lemon juice in bottle caps to trap the adults, and I tried letting the plant soil dry out for as long as possible, but the plants were suffering and the gnats kept multiplying! I then decided I needed poison, and bought different types of flying-bug sprays, but nothing worked, and I worried about spraying stuff in the air with my fish tank nearby.
My boyfriend said if I didn't get rid of the gnats, he would throw away all the plants :(, so I looked for solutions and found out about a product called Gnatrol. However, I believe Gnatrol is now unavailable, so GoGnats came up in searches and I took the plunge (I wish it was priced a bit lower). I mixed it with water (maybe more concentrate than I really needed, but I wanted to kill those bugs) and drenched every plant with it. I put all my plants in the bathtub and poured the mix through each plant until it flowed out the bottoms. Immediately there was a decrease in the amount of gnats, but a few were still flying around the next couple of days. So on the third day I did a second drench. And now, more than a week later, the fungus gnats are COMPLETELY GONE and my plants are healthy and perky.
My boyfriend and I are so happy!! It was a great purchase, and I still have a lot left over if I ever have another infestation of bugs (I think it can kill more than gnats). I also love how it's safer than toxic pesticides. Definitely a good choice!

Safer Brand 5025 Houseplant Sticky Stakes Review

Safer Brand 5025 Houseplant Sticky Stakes
Average Reviews:

This item works a little too well in fact. The little sticky traps are covered so I actually need to order more! They work well because you are able to push them as far down into the pot as you need to unlike other traps you would just hang in the general area. They seem to be helping control our gnat problem though I would recommend a pesticide to go along with them. The sticky paper helps cut down on the number of flying adults but eggs still exist in the pot that need to be taken care of as well.

Yellow Sticky Aphid Whitefly Trap Pack of 15 Review

Yellow Sticky Aphid Whitefly Trap Pack of 15
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These traps helped me get rid of a nasty little whitefly problem on my houseplants. I did use these traps indoors, so I'm not sure how effective they are when used outdoors.
The traps were great for trapping the adult whiteflies, thereby keeping them from multiplying further, but I also took some advice I found online and washed each of the infested plants with plenty of soapy water to get rid of eggs and larva that were stuck to the underside of the leaves. You have to really get in there and rub each leaf individually with soapy water and then rinse well, because the eggs that they lay are very sticky and you want to remove all of that stuff before they hatch. I used dishwashing detergent and even though it was a pain, I was able to get rid of those nasty bugs that were killing my plants.
So the traps didn't singlehandedly solve my problem, but they absolutely helped. They do what they're supposed to do, but I recommend a good washing of the plants if you're serious about getting rid of these pests.
This package of 15 was a really good value. I assumed I would get 15 strips or whatever, but I got 15 large sticky traps that were more than enough to spread throughout the apartment around all of my plants, and I still have some left over, which hopefully I will not have to use. It was a really good deal for the price, and the traps arrived within a few days of ordering. Very satisfied.

I have purchased this product twice for use on my two front yard evergreen trees. My trees have been troubled by spider mites. I have used this product to control these mites. After spraying, I have noticed marked improvement in the pine needles and even branches (branhes curve up after having curved down when infested) once the oil has taken effect. I would recommend this product for anyone having spider mite issues with tree, bushes, etc.

Ortho 0195310 1-1/3-Gallon Home Defense Max Perimeter and Indoor Insect Killer Pull 'N Spray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've used this a few times over the past 2 years. I live in an area which has lots of trees and can be overrun with bugs in the summertime. All types too, spiders, ants, carpet beetles etc. It does a really good job when I spray the outside of the house around the doors and the windows and in the overhangs where spiders like to camp. Works well around outside lighting as well, seems to do a really nice job if applied before the bugs get there. Spraying inside the house along works great as well for keeping bugs at bay, especially carpet beetles.
Only downsides are that this does not kill silverfish, and some types of spiders appear unaffected by it. It says on the package that it takes care of them but my basement still has a problem even after repeated uses of the product. Which is too bad because these things are monsters and I hate them with a passion, still haven't found a product that can effectively kill them. The other downside, as someone else pointed out, there is a lingering smell for a day or two after application. It's not terrible it's just not pleasant.
Overall for the price I'd say it's a good product. The application takes a little while if you have a large or tall house but if you hate bugs and don't want to spend the hundreds of bucks for exterminator service this is a good product which will save you money and keep a lot of the bugs away.
