(More customer reviews)I have very few requirements when it comes to potting soil. It needs to be high in nutrients, it needs to be well draining, and it needs to be pest free. I can't comment on the first one, but I can say with great confidence that Miracle-Gro Organic Choice Potting Mix fails miserably at the latter two. The soil is dense as can be, with no perlite or vermiculite to lighten it up - as a result, it drains poorly and can be expected to develop pest problems. And develop pest problems it did - probably even before I opened the bag! Within two days of planting several pots of seedlings (indoors, I might add) the entire apartment was infested with fungus gnats! The larvae of fungus gnats take over a week to develop into flies, so clearly the larvae were in the bag before I even bought it. (I should note here that I purchased the potting mix from Home Depot, not Amazon.) When I contacted Miracle-Gro, they pointed out that they do not guarantee the sterility of the potting mix, and even implicitly acknowledged that fungus gnats regularly enter their mixes through the air holes in the bags. I strongly recommend against buying this product.

Miracle-Gro 1008991 Shake'n Feed Palm Food - 4.5 Pound Review

(More customer reviews)I didn't buy this from Amazon, and the reason I didn't is that the product description does not give details about what is in this product. The Miracle-Gro website was equally uninformative. Thus, I went to a "big box store," picked up a container, read the ingredients, and bought it. My main concern was whether the product contained magnesium, manganese, iron, and calcium, as many of the websites on palm care recommend fertilizers containing these ingredients. The tiny print on the back of the container lists all of these elements except calcium. The label on the back of the container also lists copper, zinc, and sulphur. The fertilizer ratio is 8 - 8 - 8. Some of this information actually is present on the Amazon site, but only if you "zoom in" on the photo of the front of the product container, and then you can barely make out a statement that it, "Contains Magnesium, Iron, & Manganese." I only figured out that I could have done that after I had the product in my hand and saw the writing.
Anyway, I just used it to fertilize my palms only two days ago, so it is too soon to tell if it will be effective, but it was easy to apply.

(More customer reviews)I have purchased other potting mixes and been horrified to find bits of chewing gum, crushed tin cans, etc in them. I've never had this happen with Miracle Gro. Miracle Gro makes a good mix, at a decent ratio, which is great for growing most standard houseplants and excellent for growing from seed.
As for the gnats: Fungus Gnats can be found anywhere there is rot. Don't clean your sink for a week - see those bugs? Same thing. They eat rot. They cannot live in dry soil. THE BEST PREVENTION for fungus gnats is to water with either a drip-irrigation system (plastic tubing with holes in it, hidden beneath the soil surface) or water bottom-up (water the dish under the plant, and let the soil soak the water upwards).
The fastest and most common way to become infested is to overwater your plants. I did this one year - we had them everywhere, in all our food, on the walls, and it was disgusting. If you already have an infestation, try lowering the frequency of your waterings - your plants won't get dehydrated from a little less if the gnats have been happy with what they've had. Let the soil top dry completely before you water - gnats and their young live near the top, in damp soil.
Yes, I've seen more gnats with this than other soils. However, that could easily have been because the batch I had had been kept more damp in the store than the other stuff. Water less, you'll have fewer gnats. Get Scott's and be prepared to be disappointed (that's the brand I found the crushed tin-can pieces and gum in).

I have a huge Madagascar dragon tree palm, lots of various smaller palms, a sugar stalk palm, etc. All love these spikes and I keep ordering more. I fertilize about every other month, using 2-3 spikes on medium size plants and up to 5-6 in my big pots.
Palms are ideal year-round greens for houses, apartments, they tend to grow very well. Just don't over water, that's about it.

I withhold fertilizing in the fall and start watering with it again on the Spring Equinox. My office spider plant as been worse for wear after this winter and drooping and pale and generally looking sick. I decided to give it a bit of food early, and it's now very perky and dark green again in all of three days.
It's easy to use and not messy and your plants will be beautiful. I heartly recommend this stuff.
