As far as actual brightness, this is about as bright as advertised. It's bright enough to be the main light source for 1-2 plants in 5-6" pots.
However, there are some things to be aware of.
As another reviewer noted, this thing is heavy. If you intend to use a gooseneck lamp, prepare for it to weigh down both the base (to the point of toppling over) and the neck. I placed a jar of rocks on the base, and the neck is pulled down as far as it will go. There is no other option, the neck can't support the weight of this light, at least not a "place it where you want it" fashion. Oh, and the rocks aren't super ugly, they are polished rocks. Ha.
The light bulb is also large. Very large. A diameter of 4 and half inches large. I bought a little canister lamp to house it in, and it doesn't fit. I ended up using the canister for a GrowSpot light. (They cost twice as much, but are about as bright, and half the size. Neither light has a fan.)
Also, the beam is a little weird. It's very focused in the middle area, but also has a lot of light that spreads all over. It might just be me, but I'd prefer the middle to be less focused so it covers more area of the plant when the light is a foot away, and less light that spreads way outside of the area of the plant. (The Growspot's light beam is perfect for my usage.)
This light puts out a little heat when your hand is right in front of it, but the heatsink barely gets warm to the touch. According to my Kill-A-Watt, this takes 11 watts, and the Growspot Mixed Spectrum takes 9.
