Jiffy 5605 Seed Starting Mix - 4 Quart Bag Review

Jiffy 5605 Seed Starting Mix - 4 Quart Bag
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I used this to start a bunch of different seed types like tomatoes, basil, snap peas, bell peppers, and others. At the same time as I planted seeds in the Jiffy starter soil, I planted seeds outside in the dirt. The dirt in my garden is not the best stuff. Nevertheless, the seeds I planted outdoors are all doing MUCH better than the ones I planted in the Jiffy product. Without exception, the plants that I started in the Jiffy product are stunted and underdeveloped. Most are still tiny little seedlings, while the seeds which I planted in the ground are well on their way to adulthood. The kicker here is that the seeds planted in the Jiffy product sprouted one to three weeks earlier than the ones outside.
I still have some of this stuff left over. I'm going to dump it into my compost pile.

I have been starting seeds indoors for years. The Jiffy Peat Soil Pellet starting plugs have got to be the best invention ever. All you do is soak the pellets until they swell and then pull back the netting slightly and insert your seed. I have had the best results with these little miracles then any other method around. Just let your seeds grown in these until you are ready to plant, it's as if you bought a six pack from the nursery for only pennies instead of dollars.

Jiffy 5089 Tomato Starter Greenhouse 36-Plant Starter Kit Review

Jiffy 5089 Tomato Starter Greenhouse 36-Plant Starter Kit
Average Reviews:

I appreciate the comments of the prior reviewer - the dome should be taller, but I still feel these larger peat pods are so helpful. By growing my peppers, and tomatoes seeds in these larger pods, I have been able to bypass transplanting them to a 3 inch or four inch pot before taking them to plant outside. I just use these and directly transplant a 4 to 6 inch plant outside. This is less disturbing to the root system and saves me time and money. I did order some large domes to use, but these large oversized peat pods are a great time saver. I love them. I gave this 4 stars and not five since the domes could have been taller. I hope these continue to be offered by Jiffy!!

Jiffy 5131 Strips 'N Tray 32-Plant Seed Starter Review

Jiffy 5131 Strips 'N Tray 32-Plant Seed Starter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My experience with this product so far has not been ideal. I bought this at a home improvement store and it did come with a plastic cover (hydrodome)unlike this particular version. However, I would recomend not having one of those lids with this product because of the following concern. If the peat pots are packed into the bottom plastic part as designed they grow blue mold all over the pots because the peat pots + moisture + no air circulation is a great recipe for mold. It does not seem that this mold is interfering with the plant growing at all, but for people who are allergic to mold this is not ideal. I took the pots out of the tray, turned the tray upside down, set the pots on top of it and ran a fan on them and the mold went away. It returns whenever the pots are wet. The second concern I have is the pots suck all of the water out of the soil. I guess the positive side of this is you never have to worry that your plants are going to damp off because it doesn't stay wet enough, but on the flip side watering twice a day to keep the soil from being bone dry is a little much. Also, just a note: when planting the peat pots make sure to cut off the top part of the pot and bury the pot below the soils surface or the plants will dry out and die. Also, it might be a good idea to cut vertically down the pots at planting to prevent the plants from becoming root bound since the pots don't decompose as fast as advertised. The one advantage to these pots is that I will be able to start plants indoors that are hard to transplant, that is if I can keep them alive through their constant drought and mold issues.

Clonex CLO100 Rooting Compound Gel, 100ML Review

Clonex CLO100 Rooting Compound Gel, 100ML
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Recommended to me for a specific purpose by a professional nurseryman. It adheres to the cutting base so you know when it's in dirt there is some there. It worked better than another powdered product I've used for years. The two images I supplied shows a special tomato sucker, the parent was a 7.18# tomato... and worth making more than one plant. In 10 days I had a new plant, fastest rooting I've seen for this type of propagation. I'm trying it with other plant cuttings, so far it is doing much better than anything else I've tried. It seems pricy but the 100 ml bottle will go a long ways. Strongly recommend despite the price.

Jiffy 5037 15-Watt Gro Heat Mat Review

Jiffy 5037 15-Watt Gro Heat Mat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This heating mat was just what my seed trays were looking for. It's perfect in every way in our Solar Gem greenhouse. I purchased 2 of them to start - both plugged into timers that turn the mat on at 8:00 PM and off again at 9:00 AM. The heat is very even and right where it should be to promote germination, the construction quality is excellent - I have no worries about watering the flats for fear of electrical damage or shock - extremely well sealed and very heavy material in construction. I just put 2 more of them into my cart.
For the price and quality, you cannot go wrong here.

Jiffy 5262 Self Watering Professional Greenhouse 70-Plant Starter Kit Review

Jiffy 5262 Self Watering Professional Greenhouse 70-Plant Starter Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Well, anything could be better. To call the construction flimsy is to give it too much credit; the plastic parts will require careful handling at every stage.
But for sprouting seeds, I doubt it can be beat. I planted 16 tomato seeds in 8 peat pods. After only 4 days, 10 of the seeds, in 7 of the pods, had sprouted. On day 5 I have 3 sprouts in 2 of my 4 pods with year-old eggplant seeds, plus 1 bell pepper sprout, also from year-old seeds. The instructions are complete and easy to follow. I could quibble over the price, given the unit's construction from what would ordinarily be called packaging material, but it does come with 70 peat pellets, 54 of which I'll have for next spring. Net net, I have to highly recommend it.
BTW, I am warming the greenhouse from below. Instead of using a $40 warming mat, I've propped the greenhouse about 3/4 inch high on packaging foam and coiled a couple lengths of rope light beneath it. Checked the pod temps after a day with a meat thermometer; they varied from 78 to 82 degrees F, perfect for tomato sprouts. Your results may vary. If you go this route, be sure to buy a rope light with incandescent lights, not LEDs. And thanks to whatever web site taught me this simple method.

Jiffy 5718 Professional Greenhouse 50-Plant Starter Kit Review

Jiffy 5718 Professional Greenhouse 50-Plant Starter Kit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Jiffy 72-plant starter from Walmart at a very low price. It consists of a thin black plastic tray, a transparent plastic cover and another piece of thin black plastic sheet with holes for the peat pellets. The peat pellets are included too. All one has to do is to add water and wait for the peat to expand. (The pellets have fabric wrappings around them to keep them in the right shape, although one of them is broken and the peat overflows into a shapeless mess.) Then seeds can be planted in them. The cover goes on to keep the moisture in. It is important to take the cover off as soon as the seeds sprout roots or stems, for fungus may grow otherwise.
Overall, the whole thing is very cheaply made, but it does work and the (Walmart) price cannot be beat. I have two other starter sets from Gardeners.com. They are made of equally flimsy plastic but in a more sophisticated design (similar to Burpee Ultimate Seed Starting System) with Styrofoam holders that allow the use of ordinary potting soil, which has better resistance against fungus than a bag of peat. They cost 4 times as much, however, and hold only 1/3 as many seedlings. For budget seed growing, Jiffy remains the best bet.

Growers Supply Company Perma-Nest Plant Trays, Pack of 4 Review

Growers Supply Company Perma-Nest Plant Trays, Pack of 4
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To be honest about this product, I should warn you that they can be "habit forming". Oh, sure, you start out by using them to hold your plants, but before you know it, they are holding a group of things on a bookshelf. Then, there's the one you start using to feed the birds outside out of? Yes, one of these also makes the perfect bird bath come summer. Then there's the one holding the plastic containers in the kitchen. And the one on the closet shelf holding your scraves and gloves. Well, you can see how they "invade" ones' household.
If you're into plants only, you'll find there's a host of other parts, from drainage trays to domes, made to work with these trays. You can raise seedlings or propagate new stock from old inside them. I have an eight foot indoor light garden so I have several of these trays in use, constantly.
I've personally used them some 20 years or better, so obviously, I'm a fan. They've gotten a lot more expensive than they use to be - so I order fewer, but I'm still sold on them.

Hydrofarm CK64060 Hot House with Heat Mat Review

Hydrofarm CK64060 Hot House with Heat Mat
Average Reviews:

I got this from Amazon because they were hard to find locally. Dont you know it Lowes and Home Depot have started carrying them now for the same price. This does not have the grow media with it so I had to go to Lowes to get some starter soil for it where I saw Lowes had started carrying them and they had the media included.Yeah I was pissed. This one has a taller dome which was a major attraction for me but the moisture condenses on the dome runs down the sides and pours out of the planter as the dome lip sits on the outside of the tray. So if you have this in the house its gonna make a mess unless you put the tray in a bigger tray to catch the water. So buy it locally that way if you dont like it its easy to return.

Burpee 72-Cell Greenhouse Kit - Seed Starting Review

Burpee 72-Cell Greenhouse Kit - Seed Starting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I decided to sprout my own garden plants this year, so I went to Walmart and bought 2 of the Jiffy seed starting kits. I filled them up very quicking (even though they each start 72 plants)and on a subsequent visit to Home Depot, saw the Burpee kits. "Well, well," I thought, "this must be MUCH better than the Jiffy!. First off, it's made by Burpee, the reputable seed company. Secondly, it's a bit more expensive than the Jiffy. Thirdly, it's got these cute little markers so you can tell what is planted where."
Fellow Amazon consumer, I was wrong, wrong WRONG! Don't get me wrong - if you want to start seeds and can't find the Jiffy model, or if you've already bought the Burpee, you'll still be able to grow little plants. But here are the advantages the Jiffy model has over the Burpee: 1. Jiffy uses little peat pellets that grow into bags of peat. You DO have to be careful that they are positioned correctly when you add the water the first time, but they work beautifully and can be removed easily from the little greenhouse. This means that you can reuse the greenhouse again and again by simply purchasing refill peat bag pellets. 2. The pellet design, and the design of the inserts for the Jiffy make watering MUCH easier. You can even water the entire little greenhouse by removing one little bag carefully and pouring the water into one cell. The Burpee, however, must be watered very carefully so as not to disturb your little seedlings, and you have to water in many places to moisten every cell. 3. The Jiffy is cheaper. I DO advise buying either greenhouse-lette locally, they are almost %50 cheaper than ordering on line.
As for the cute little seed markers? I can't find anything that will write on them! I've tried permanent markers, pencils, ballpoints, regular markers, colored pencils, crayons and have even tried to melt the crayons! Nothing works! I have to tear off the top of the seed bag and hang it on the marker, which is inconvenient if you haven't used all the seeds in the bag. Also, the paper falls off easily. Ah well.
