4 Tube, 4 Foot, T5 Fluorescent Grow Light Fixture w/ bulbs Review

4 Tube, 4 Foot, T5 Fluorescent Grow Light Fixture w/ bulbs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this unit on the recommendation of a local dealer. The first unit I received worked great for about a week, but quickly developed a problem with a couple of the bulbs flickering and refusing to light up to their full brightness. After moving the bulbs around, it became clear that the problem was not with the bulbs but with the specific sockets themselves. Two of the sockets had failed and would no longer illuminate the bulb to its normal brightness.
We returned the defective fixture to the dealer in exchange for a second unit. Like the first, this was a brand new factory sealed fixture. After the problems, we decided to unpack the second unit and plug it in BEFORE we went through the trouble installing it in our grow room. Good thing! When we plugged it in for the first time, we were shocked and disappointed to discover that just like the first unit, this unit was also failing to light up all of the tubes properly. In this case, one of the sockets near the center of the fixture was defective. We moved the bulbs around just to confirm.
Unfortunately for us, when we returned the second unit to the dealer, he informed us that he was now sold out of this model due to several customer returns and exchanges in addition to ours! All he could offer us was the more expensive version of this fixture that had additional features we really didn't need or want. And despite all the hassle we had gone through with a product this dealer had highly recommend, he was unwilling to give us any kind of deal on the more expensive version!
Since we had a new crop of seedlings that needed a reliable light source TODAY, we had no choice but to pay the RETAIL difference for the more expensive version. At least for now, this more expensive version is working without any of the issues we encountered with the FLT44. While our issues are likely an isolated incident caused by a bad batch of parts, you would hope that basic quality control measures at the factory would catch this kind of problem. Why these units passed inspection and were shipped off to our dealer, I have no idea. You would have to ask Hydrofarm about that.
As for the local dealer who recommended this in the first place? I won't be shopping there anymore. I generally prefer to buy the majority of my products online, but since this local dealer took the time and seemed to know his grow light systems, I decided to pay a little more locally. Look where that all got me! Several hours of hassle installing and uninstalling the fixtures, driving the 30 miles back and forth to the dealer TWICE, and to add insult to injury, being charged FULL RETAIL for the a more expensive version I didn't need or want, but had to buy because the one I originally purchased was no longer available based on the defective sockets!
Next time, I buy from Amazon! Even if I had encountered this same QC problem with a factory sealed product, it wouldn't have cost me all the extra time and money to get it resolved, and I would have saved a respectable amount of cash upfront to begin with. Do brick and mortar retailers really have a problem understanding why they are losing customers in droves? You would have to be insane to continue to shop at a local merchant who puts you through a story like this!

Solo 418 1-Liter One-Hand Pressure Sprayer Review

Solo 418 1-Liter One-Hand Pressure Sprayer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Wow what a great product, this is nothing like the little sprayers that I have used in the past. This is a solid, well built and reliable sprayer. This is a true "mister" not the kind of spray that drips, you can spray all your plants without a mess. I have hardwood floors and it is not a problem, this little baby pumps out a spray that is almost the consistency of steam. You can adjust this for a heavier spray if you like but why. The nozzle tilts up and down 90ยบ to get in and around the leaves.
Once a month I put a cup of water and vinegar in the sprayer (5parts water & 1 part vinegar) pump it up and lock the slide open and empty it in the sink and this keeps it from ever clogging up from scale.
I wish I had found this years ago so I would not have wasted all the time and money on cheap sprayers. I think it is great and the plants sure look better for it.

Sunshine Systems GSSPOT GrowSpot Mixed Spectrum LED Grow Light Bulb E39 Review

Sunshine Systems GSSPOT GrowSpot Mixed Spectrum LED Grow Light Bulb E39
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I live in an apartment that's shaded all day long by large trees and nearby buildings. While this is great for my AC bills, it's not so great for my garden. So I grow potted bush tomatoes, peppers, alpine strawberries, and herbs indoors.
Before I bought these light bulbs, I was using incandescent plant lights, but I wasn't satisfied with the light output (my tomatoes were looking a bit yellow), the scorching on the leaves, or the crazy energy costs and cost for replacement light bulbs. I did some research on the internet and saw that LED lights were all the rage, and of all of the kind that could be screwed into a socket, the GrowSpot seemed to be the best recommended. The price put me off, but once I did the math (I would recoup my costs in less than a year just off of light bulb replacement, and the GrowSpot has a five year warranty), I decided to spring for it.
On initial impression, the GrowSpot looks like a high quality product. It's sturdy and has a sleek, high-tech appearance. It's also -bright-, much brighter than my incandescents were, with better coverage. Even after running all day, it's barely warm to the touch -- I can press my finger against its surface and leave it there.
And now that my plants have been under the lights for a couple of weeks, I can also say that the light is better. My tomatoes are recovering, and my miniature peppers are taking off. Most telling, the pepper that is closest to the light is at least an inch taller than the others and started blooming a week and a half before. And this is with only a tiny difference distance, a few inches at most.
I knocked off a star from these lights for two reasons. The first is that the lights come equipped with their own miniature fans, which is why they keep so cool. The fans aren't loud -- they're quieter than a computer fan -- but if you mind the background 'white noise', then they might not be for you. Also, the plants simply don't look as pretty under the red and blue lights; their green leaves show up as almost black. In terms of the light, this is a good thing, because it shows that the leaves really are absorbing all of the light pointed at them, but I do miss looking at my pretty green plants.
All in all, I'm very happy with this purchase -- my only regret is that I didn't shell out for the GrowSpot sooner.

Well build, economic, and reliable, but:
Did not notice any changes on my plant.
Not enough lumens to cause improvements.
After 2 months of beeing 1" apart from the top of the plant, I took it down.
Advice to wait for the more powerful ones to come down in price.

I've only been using this light for a few days, but I like it. Better yet my plants like it. With a good reflector it covers a wide area and really brightened up my grow room. Any wide screw-in reflector will do. Under $8 at any hardware store. It would take several to bring a crop to harvest, but it's great for seedlings and medium sized plants. And for the price several would be very affordable. It gives off very little heat so it can be placed very close to plants without fear of burning them, and you don't need additional cooling fans. Good little starter light.

NutraFin CO2 Natural Plant System Review

NutraFin CO2 Natural Plant System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you plan on having plants in your aquarium then injecting CO2 into your tank is highly recommended. Having a yeast-based CO2 system for me is the easiest, cheapest and safest way to go (as opposed to a canister-based system). When using a yeast-based system, like this Hagen one, it's impossible to overdose CO2 in your tank which is nice.
Remember, having 2-4 watts of "quality" fluorescent lighting per gallon (compact fluorescent fixtures seems to me to be the best choice) in your aquarium is even more important than adding CO2.
This off the shelf system should be sufficient for beginning aquarists who are starting out with plants (fish don't need extra CO2). While not as efficient or cheap as a DIY one, it does a decent job of putting a fair amount of CO2 in the tank for about 2 week periods at a time. People who also don't want to mix their own yeast mixture will find the packets more convenient (however less effective).
The Hagen diffuser (that dissolves the CO2 bubbles into the water) does a decent job. However, there is waste, meaning, CO2 bubbles escape to the surface before being dissolved. But you still will get a raise in the tank's CO2 level.
So, if you are new to CO2 systems and want something that is minimal investment ($35) and don't want to make your own system, then this is a no brainer system. I think you should get it and help your plants to thrive.
But if you want a cheaper, much more effective system, then do this: For 10-25 gallon tank, use one 2 liter soda bottle. For 25-50, use 2. Mix 1/2 teaspoon of bakers yeast in warm water and then let it sit for 5-10 min. Then dissolve 2 cups of sugar into filtered water and pour into soda bottle. Add the yeast. Drill a hole in the soda bottle cap and either glue an air line to run through it or buy a metal airline connector (like from Lowes or Home Depot) and glue it (using Goop) into the cap. After you have the air line running out from the soda bottle (if you have two then connect them using a T brass connector), run it into your aquarium and dissolve the CO2 using a diffuser (like this Hagen one, howbeit not efficient), an air stone (also not efficient) or into a small pop bottle that a Rio Power Head is forcing water into to completely dissolve the CO2 bubbles. You can search around and find photos on how this is done.
After all of my trial and errors, the above method using soda bottles with a metal airline connector in the cap (glued in with goop) and a Rio Power head is the best, cheapest and most effective system for pumping CO2 into your tank.
If you are purchasing this Hagen system, just remember that for every 20 gallons of water you have in your aquarium, you need to set up another Hagen canister. So for a 40 gallon tank, buy 2 of these. But remember, you will get a nice rise in CO2 levels but not near the level you would using a forced water reactor using a Power head. There are two parts to a CO2 system: the amount and quality of CO2 bubbles being produced and then also the amount those CO2 bubbles are being diffused into the aquarium water. The best is having the bubbles completely disappear into the water. Then you know there is no waste to your CO2 production.
To find out how much CO2 is effectively being dissolved into your tank, search online for the CO2 measurement calculator. This is measured by the ratio of KH and PH in your tank (as long as you haven't used PH buffers).
Hope this helps you in making a valued purchase.

Plant Growth Lamp Review

Plant Growth Lamp

Simple to use and puts out a good amount of light. It turns on when you open it and off when closed. So you might need a little extra room to be able to close it without hitting you precious plant.
Be sure not to put the light too close to the plants. And be sure to tighten the hinge so it does not swing down on top of something. And I recommend getting a timer so that you can set it up and forget it.

Hydrofarm JSV2 2-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System Review

Hydrofarm JSV2 2-Foot Jump Start T5 Grow Light System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I ordered the JSV2 2' grow light jump start system and it arrived pretty quickly and set up was a breeze. All you really need is a screw driver and common sense. I put it together in about 10 minutes and the pully system for the light comes already assembled and works great.
It also comes with a 24 watt T5 6400k High output fluorescent bulb which is already installed upon arrival. The 6400k bulb is a very efficient low heat bulb which is designed to promote overall growth in the plant. Because it is a low heat emitting bulb you can place the light source a couple inches from the plants to prevent the loss of light.
This is not a complex system, it is simple and efficient. For the price it would be hard to find a package which comes with a stand, a reflective fixture, a good bulb, easy adjustment, and easy assembly. It is a good first step into the grow light world which is vast and and many times confusing. I also found that it isn't really that flimsy. The product isn't industrial grade but the light fixture is sturdy and so is the stand if you put it together correctly.
I will be growing venus fly traps when they arrive and I have researched grow light systems quite a bit. This system will only cost me $1.50 cents to run per month. The calculation can be done by taking the 24 Watts and dividing it by 1000 to get KW. Then multiply that number by how much the electric company charges per Kilowatt hour. That is the price it will cost to power the light for one hour. Then multiply that number for one hour by however many hours you will run it during the day. Then just multiply the cost of one day by 30 days and you have how much it will cost you to run the system for a month.
For example here is mine 24W/1000 = .024
.024 x .1484 (cost per kWh) = .0035616 cents per hour (less than 1 cent an hour). .0035616 x 14 hours = .0498624 dollars per day (about 5 cents). .0498624 x 30 = 1.50 per month. So my light run for 14 hours will cost one dollar and fifty cents per month. This is assuming that the light runs at 24 Watts per hour.
When I was shopping for grow lights online I found a very helpful website that includes a much better description on the Jump Start grow light and has a lot of technical and very helpful information on plant lighting. littlegreenhouse.com/accessory/lights2.shtml#jsfixture.
The website has a grow lighting guide and also contains the calculation above. It was by far the most helpful website when considering this purchase. It includes a good bit of information about the T5 6400k bulb and the Jump Start from HydroFarm.
