I have used these many times. They are a wonderful product. All you do is push the spikes in the dirt around your plants and it fertilizes and releases insecticide that the plant draws up into it's tissues. Any bugs, like aphids, that want to chew on your plants are history. No spraying or mixing and you don't have to worry about applying on a windy day, or trying to get it on the under side of leaves. I LOVE it.

Intelligent PL-1 Plant Light - Indoor Grow Light Review

Intelligent PL-1 Plant Light - Indoor Grow Light
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I LOVE these lights! I was skeptical at first but am back today to order yet another one. Do you have a dark room with no windows or just a dark corner of your house, put one of these on any table and viola!
Here's how it works:
Once you plug it in and set the season, winter, spring, summer or fall it's set. The light turns on and off after approx 12 hours on the spring setting, it will cycle through and go to summer then fall and winter and shortening the length of light hours to simulate sunlight. (just push the button back to spring if you want to grow violets)
Also there is a metal prong attached you can pop into your pot and it will tell you when you need to water by how far you put it in the soil,a light flashes on the back of the arm base when it's time to water. The prong is several inches long so push it all the way down for cactus, yes, these are working great for my cactus by keeping the light only 1-3 inches above the plant, or down just a tiny bit for a water loving plant like a peace lily. I can grow African violets like a champ by keeping it on the spring or summer setting. Oh, and you can fill the base with an inch or so of water if you want to create some humidity, just sit your pot on the raised bumps and keep the water below them. Tells you when to water, adds humidity if you want (works great for orchids) turns off and on automatically. It's a winner all around in my opinion. I bought four of these and am back for my fifth today. A nice plant on a stand with this light brightens the gloomiest corner. These are packaged well and would be a wonderful gift!

EasyBloom 1000 Plant Sensor Review

EasyBloom 1000 Plant Sensor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When I received the EasyBloom Plant Sensor, I was excited because I had been struggling to grow plants on my new property despite years of gardening experience. This product promised to recommend and monitor my plants to determine what was going wrong. Unfortunately, it measures nothing more than I could tell by sticking my own finger in the soil and watching the shadows for a day: moisture and light. Yes, it measures temperature and relative humidity, but those vary both daily and seasonally and can be figured out by walking out the door. It does not analyze the soil -- probably the most crucial information that cannot be intuitively known -- for type, fertility, toxicity, and acidity. You must discover and enter this yourself on the web site.
The monitor setting does basically the same thing, only over a longer time so you can see the moisture and light fluctuations over a longer period of time; again, it cannot diagnose over- or under-fertilization, incorrect acidity, compacted or too sandy soil, diseases, or pests, the most common reasons a plant dies. The EasyBloom can take a snapshot of the location for future reference.
Probably the best part of the device is the web interface that provides detailed information on recommended plants. Yes, this information can be found online or in a good plant book, but the site shows thumbnail photos of the plants that can then lead the user to a more detailed description, including care, known pests, height, growing zones, attractiveness to birds, shape, etc. I really would have liked a "deer resistant" option; maybe they will add that in the future. Strangely enough, the site does not recommend the plants that *are* thriving in my landscape.
Beginning gardeners will find this device much more useful than experienced ones since they may not yet know how to use light conditions (shade, partial shade, afternoon sun, etc.) and soil moisture content to select the proper plants for an area. Unfortunately, they are also the ones who might over-fertilize or select the wrong plant for the soil type.
Although the EasyBloom is not comprehensive enough for advanced help, it would make a good housewarming gift for someone's first home. I'll be the first in line when they upgrade the device to include soil testing and fertility.
UPDATE: I purposefully mistreated a houseplant to see what the EasyBloom device would say -- and it was spot on. It identified low light and improper watering, making a suggestion to repot it (to get a more absorbent soil) and place it in a better lit location.
Also, as of December 15, 2008, Easy Bloom supports Macs with its online software. I've used it -- and it works well. Please read the comments attached to this review to see the response of an EasyBloom rep who lists some changes since I wrote the above.-- Debbie Lee Wesselmann

Well, I got my order in. I may update this as things change. I got 8 seeds, not 5, plus a free packet of sunflower seeds. Nice. prompt service.
I can't Imagine how a reviewer could establish the seeds as 'nonviable" on first glance. But I grew up with maple trees, and I have to say these look just like the 'helicopters' that would delight me in fall. Except smaller :)

Hydrofarm HGTL/HGTLF Thirsty Light Original Digital Indoor Plant Moisture Sensor Review

I'm terrible with houseplants. I received one of these as a gift, and for two years it's been keeping my plant alive - never even had to change the battery. I'm looking to buy a second one.

Take the guesswork out of watering your potted plants with the Hydrofarm Thirsty Light Original Digital Indoor Plant Moisture Sensor. When a plant's soil becomes dry, the LED on the Thirsty Light blinks to let you know. The sensor head measures just over 2-inches long, so you won't even know it's there until it starts blinking. You can leave the resilient sensor in one pot, or use it to periodically check moisture levels in all your indoor pots--it tests conditions in one second, providing fast, accurate reads.
LED Alert Tells You When to Water PlantsThirsty Light continuously monitors the condition of the soil in your potted plants, testing the moisture level once every second. The senor top features a small LED light that flashes once it's time to water your plant. While the sensor measures a total 6.5 inches, the green top is a mere 2-inches long, so you won't notice it until the soil becomes dry.
By letting you know when your potted plants need water, Thirsty Light eliminates the temptation to overwater plants. A comprehensive user and watering guide is included.
Light Blinks Faster as Soil Becomes DryerThis sensor uses Drypoint technology, which can sense five different levels of dryness. As the soil gets dryer, the light blinks faster, letting you know how urgent the need for water is becoming. The included moisture signal chart explains each blinking pattern, as well as where to properly insert the sensor's probe.
The sensor also has a unique blinking pattern to indicate when the batteries are low.
Resilient and Long-Lasting ProbeThirsty Light features an ABS plastic casing and a durable brass probe. With constant use, the probe will change color and develop a patina, which simply helps protect it from corrosion. If left in soil for long periods of time, simply wipe the probe with a damp cloth to remove mineral deposits.
Product and Warranty InformationThe Thirsty Light is backed by a manufacturer's 30-day limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. It's powered by two included 1.5-volt lithium batteries that can be replaced when necessary.

Variegated Hindu Rope Plant - Hoya - 4 Inch Pot Review

Variegated Hindu Rope Plant - Hoya - 4 Inch Pot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This pot contained two plants, not the three specified in the listing. They were not potbound, as the listing claims they prefer, seemed to have been potted very recently (no intertwining of roots), and when I took them out to examine a lively worm disappeared into the rest of the non-soil potting mix. The two plants seem healthy enough, so I'll tend them and see what happens.

This is my favorite type of cuphea plant. It is long lasting, in my area blooms until freezing temps, and is a hummingbird magnet. Also, it tolerates drought well and is constantly in bloom. You do not have to baby this plant once it's established. Makes a pretty addition to my container flower collection.

Brussel's Money Tree Bonsai Review

The plant is very healthy. It arrived quickly and in good shape.
What disappoints me is that it is described as 10-12" tall and in a 10" pot. This plant is 20" tall and in a 5" pot. It looks silly.....the pot is WAY too small for the height. It does not look "Bonsai" due to it's height. If I had seen it in person I would NOT have bought it.

Croton ~Curly Colorful Leaves~ "Mammey" Great House Plant Review

Croton ~Curly Colorful Leaves~ Mammey Great House Plant
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was excited when I saw the picture of this plant and the price. Even with shipping being a lot more than the cost of the plant itself, the overall price I thought was still a steal. Then the plant showed up today. Yes, it's the same kind of plant but it looks like a little baby version. Nowhere near as big and full as the picture. It's EXTREMELY misleading. I would have given this one star for being so misleading instead of two, but if I hold onto the plant long enough and take care of it, someday it may look o.k. It's a nice plant for $4.95, but I would not have paid this plus shipping to get a plant this small if I had known.
Update - I reread the information in the plant description, and it does say the plant delivered is not pictured, so I apparantly missed that. However, it is kind of buried and still slightly deceiving. Very nice plant though and I found a great pot for it - just don't expect anything huge to start with.

AMAZING Egg Tree 15 Seeds-Grow Indoors/Out-Edible Fruit Review

AMAZING Egg Tree 15 Seeds-Grow Indoors/Out-Edible Fruit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just wanted to say that I received my seeds very quickly after I had purchased them! I was amazed at the speedy delivery! However, I was quite sad that I didnt get instructions on *how* to plant them. I received a "general seed instruction" sheet, however, it mostly tells me common seed germination problems and tips for improving seed germination. Under the Common seed germination problems section, it states "Before planting, check the seed packet. make sure to plant the seeds no deeper than the depth indicated." However, no where does it say *how* deep to plant them! I guess I will just have to google some info on how to plant these seeds before I decide to dive in and try it out. Anyway, the reason I only gave 3 stars, is because of the lack of (or minimal) instructions, however, I am very happy about the speedy shipping!

Flambeau 6510TG-DS Compact Upside-Down Patio Garden Review

Flambeau 6510TG-DS Compact Upside-Down Patio Garden
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I will start by saying chances are you will be disappointed if you expect to receive the item as it is currently described. An explanation of how the description is misleading and at times completely inaccurate will follow; however, that being said, this patio garden can still be a great value for the cost. When all is said and done, I am happy with it, but I can't say with any measure of certainty that I would have purchased it in the first place if the description had been accurate.
Judge for yourself.
The bad, the misleading, and the bold-face lies:
The item description says there are four pop-out holes in the bottom of the planting tray. There are NONE. What you do get is a planting tray with two holes that have already been drilled out of the bottom where raised mounds of hard plastic had once been. There are also two additional mounds of plastic that clearly designate where additional holes can be placed if you want to plant the maximum of four tomato vines as advertised. These are NOT pop out holes. Which leads to the second glaring misrepresentation of "slight assembly, no tools." Wanting to get maximum usage out of my patio garden, I got my electric drill and drilled a series of holes around the perimeter, attempting to make my own version of a pop out hole. After spending well over an hour on the project and beating the heck out of the thing with a hammer, I was still no closer to having even one of the holes beat out. I resorted to visiting my parents to use their drill press, which had the holes carved out in a matter of seconds. Of course, a drill press is a very expensive piece of equipment that not everyone will have access to and would definitely fall under the header of "tools." Finally, though this is not necessarily an issue of any misrepresentation, you should be aware that you will need to place something over the hole and around the stem of your plant to prevent your potting soil from pouring out the bottom. I used a sponge which I slit from one end to the middle, held the sponge open to slide the stem to the middle, then when released, the sponge reshapes itself over the hole to keep the soil where it belongs.
The good:
Despite all of the things that you DON'T get, there are a lot of nice things that you DO get. The tower itself is very attractive. Once you fill the base (either with water, sand, or pebbles), it is very sturdy. There are essentially three places for your plants to go: small plants can be placed on the top, tomatoes (or other upside down plants) hanging down from the bottom, and I have set small pots on top of the base. Having a pot on the bottom also has the added benefit of serving to catch any water that drips from the plants above. All in all, this is one of the nicer looking upside down planters and is sold at a fraction of the cost of the others. I liked that it is a complete upside down planting solution, so I don't have to worry about shepherd hooks or anything like that. Also, don't be concerned with the all-plastic construction. This is incredibly durable plastic, as my hammer and drill bit can attest to. To sum up the good, if you happen to have access to a drill press, getting a planter that holds up to 4 tomato vines for $26 is an incredible value.
I purchased a total of three gardens. Despite all of the aggravation, I have decided to keep them. This means two things: the issues I have outlined were no fluke, they are glaring misrepresentations. It also means that despite being severely inconvenienced (to put it mildly), the garden still managed to win me over. I have only just planted my first upside down plants, so I can't tell you how well this style of gardening will work and this review is solely on the planter, not the gardening.
Amazon has been given a detailed account of the inaccuracies and misrepresentations listed in this review. I hope they have the integrity to get the issue corrected, even though that will render my review largely irrelevant.
The bottom line:
If you are aware of what you are getting on the front end and still decide to go ahead and make a purchase, chances are you won't be disappointed.
